The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Serum Review - Mint Blush Love

Hello everyone, today I will be sharing my experience with DECIEM’s The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid serum. As you all know, I love love this brand for skincare. What I like is their simple, straightforward approach to skincare. They state the formulation and ingredients honestly and do not make any fake claims by advertising. The only con is that the ordinary products are not easily available in India and you have to get them from international websites or order from Instagram sellers. I wish The Ordinary launches soon in India.

In my previous post I had reviewed The Ordinary AHA 30% bha 2% Peeling solution.

Thought the AHA BHA peel was not the first product I got from this brand. In fact, the first products I ordered from the ordinary were their Niacinamide 10% and hyaluronic acid serum(yes, surprise, surprise!!).

What is The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid 2% +B5 serum? What does it do?

It is supposed to hydrate your skin and make it appear plumper & smoother. It is a water based serum which contains Hyaluronic acid and B5. Hyaluronic acid may be called an acid but it is not an active and is in fact very gentle on the skin. The hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times moisture in the skin as a result of which the skin appears healthy, plump , smoother and firmer.

So I am writing this review pretty late… well actually an year late!! So yeah, I can say it is a long time to know and review a product in the most reliable way possible.  This is the only Hyaluronic acid serum I have tried till date and I feel it does what it claims quite well.

For those of you who don’t know, Hyaluronic acid or popularly called HA in the skincare world is a sugar molecule which attracts 1000 times its molecular weight in water. We all have naturally occurring HA in various parts of our body. The reason a new born baby’s skin is so soft is because they have plenty of hyaluronic acid in their skin but as we start aging, this naturally occurring hyaluronic acid goes on depleting. Hence, you need to provide an extra dose of hydration by introducing HA in to your skincare. This amazing hydrating ingredient is suitable for all skin types including dry skin, oily skin, acne prone skin and sensitive skin.

An important point that I want to share with you all here is that HA comes in various molecular sizes. Various brands mention the molecular weight of the HA molecules. What you may infer from that is a large weight hyaluronic acid molecule will attract and hold more water while a smaller size and low weight HA molecule will penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin. The Ordinary Hyaluronic acid 2% +B5 has molecules of all sizes and weights hence it forms as barrier on your skin as well as penetrates deeper into it. The B5 in this serum further helps in smoothening the facial surface.

How to use it?

Based on your skin type, you may use it during the day or night or both. My skin is not dry but only dehydrated. I like to use it at night followed by my Bioderma Atoderm. I specially love using it on days I am using no actives or after using the AHA BHA peeling solution. I have a combination skin hence I tend to use a lot more of this under my eyes, around my mouth and my forehead and lesser on my cheeks. If you have a dry skin, you can use it during the day as well. Just make sure to follow up with a moisturizer and sunscreen.

What to expect?

1.Smoother, firmer and bouncier skin.

2.Hydrated skin when followed by moisturizer.

3.Minimise appearance of fine lines with regular usage.

What not to expect?

1.Instant results.

2.Lowering pigmentation.

3.Diminishing wrinkles.

What I liked about the Ordinary Hyaluronic acid 2% +B5

It is hydrating and my skin does feel smoother and plumper the next day. Just make sure to apply a moisturizer because HA draws moisture from the surroundings and if you will not apply moisturizer after this, it will start drawing moisture from your skin and this will make your skin drier.  It makes my skin feel nourished and cared for after applying Aha and BHAs.

What I don’t like about the Ordinary Hyaluronic acid 2% +B5

It is fragrance free and due to that it has a faint chemical like smell. I mean it is good that its fragrance free but the resulting chemical smell is not pleasant. It also takes a minute or two to absorb into the skin. Thought the smell goes away in a few minutes, but I like my skincare products to smell pleasant too or smell like nothing. In fact, I do not apply it on days I have to go to bed immediately. I apply it half an hour before for this reason.
