The Post Office Scandal
The scandal known as the 'Post Office scandal' began when Paula Vennells resigned as CEO in February 2019. At that time, many employees were still being accused of theft by the company. After leaving her position, Vennells became a preacher at the Church of St. Owen and took on non-executive director roles at the Cabinet Office and chair of the Imperial College Healthcare NHS trust. The scandal, also referred to as the 'Post Office Affair', resulted in numerous sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses being falsely accused of theft and false accounting. Despite protests about errors in the Horizon system, which reportedly cost thousands of pounds, their concerns were ignored. Some employees were forced to take out loans or use their personal funds to rectify the situation. Eventually, a system bug in Horizon was identified as the cause of the financial discrepancies. Tragically, some former employees passed away with their reputations tarnished, while others faced imprisonment or financial ruin. In December 2019, the Post Office admitted its mistakes and agreed to settle with 555 plaintiffs. On April 23, 2021, the Court of Appeal overturned the criminal convictions of 39 former employees.
